Welcome to St. Louis Sleep Apnea Treatment

Obstructive sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that is characterized by abnormal lapses in breathing while asleep; these lapses in breathing are known as “apnea events”.  When someone is suffering with sleep apnea they can literally stop breathing up to 30 times in a single hour, and these apnea events can last up to a minute at a time.  Most people just associate sleep apnea with snoring, but the improper breathing is what is much more dangerous to one’s health.

Sleep apnea can trigger many further health complications down the road if left untreated.  Heart issues, increased chance of stroke, high blood pressure, memory problems, and obesity are just a few of the health problems that can arise.  The American Heart Association likens untreated sleep apnea to that of smoking cigarettes.

The lack of proper oxygen to the body’s primary organ systems are what bring upon these health issues.  When someone with sleep apnea falls asleep the muscles in the back of the throat, mostly the tongue, loosen and collapse.  This collapse causes on obstruction to the airway that restricts proper breathing.  This causes the body to not intake the proper amount of oxygen, while at the same time not allowing the body to purge the proper amount of harmful carbon dioxide.  This results in a tremendous amount of pressure and stress to major organ systems like the brain and heart!

So what can be done to treat this condition? There are three primary options for seeking sleep apnea treatment: CPAP Therapy, Oral Appliance Therapy, and Oral Surgery.  Depending on the severity of the apnea will decide which course of action would be best for treatment.

Many people that fall under the mild-moderate cases would be best suited with an oral appliance.  This is akin to wearing a mouthpiece to sleep that will help keep the airway open for optimal breathing.  Typically a dentist will help to craft a custom oral appliance for sleep apnea treatment.
